India to host BRICS Women Ministerial Meeting after preparatory talks in Kochi

India is set to host the BRICS Women Ministerial Meeting in Kochi, Kerala, from 8 to 9 July 2026, bringing together ministers and heads of delegation from BRICS Member Countries for high-level discussions on women-led development.

The meeting is being held during India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026. According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the ministerial meeting will focus on strengthening cooperation, advancing women’s empowerment, and reaffirming a shared commitment to inclusive, resilient and sustainable development.

The Kochi meeting follows the BRICS Women Working Group Meeting, held on 6–7 July 2026. Senior officials from member countries used the working group meeting to discuss key areas within the BRICS Women Track and lay the groundwork for ministerial-level outcomes.

India’s BRICS Chairship theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The Women Track aligns with this theme. It is organised around women’s leadership, digital and financial inclusion, entrepreneurship and skills, and women’s role in climate action, food security and nutrition.

For readers, the meeting matters because it places women’s economic and public participation within a larger multilateral agenda. BRICS now includes 11 countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. The Ministry has said BRICS accounts for around 40% of global GDP and represents about 49.5% of the global population.

The agenda

The Ministerial Meeting is expected to deliberate on proposed outcomes from the working group. It will also provide strategic direction for cooperation among BRICS countries. BRICS’ official release says discussions will cover women’s leadership, economic opportunities, and digital & financial inclusion. It will also be about entrepreneurship, climate action, food security and nutrition.

The programme will also include exhibitions showcasing India’s achievements in women-led development across sectors. These sectors are rural development, STEM, nutrition and education. This event also includes a plenary session and thematic panel discussions with experts, policymakers, and practitioners.

The meeting builds on earlier preparatory discussions under the BRICS Women Track. The third preparatory meeting, held virtually on 29 June 2026, discussed priority areas and expected outcomes. That includes a Digital Repository of Best Practices and BRICS Women’s Capacity Building Guidelines.

Change in Content had earlier written on the BRICS Women’s Working Group India preparatory meeting. That set the stage for the Kochi meetings.

For India, the Kochi ministerial meeting is a chance to present women-led development as a policy and cooperation agenda, rather than only a domestic welfare theme. The outcomes will be worth tracking for what they signal on cross-country collaboration, practical policy exchange and the role of women in economic and public decision-making across BRICS nations.

The Change in Content view

The BRICS Women Ministerial Meeting arrives at a time when women-led development is increasingly being linked to economic resilience, digital access, entrepreneurship, climate response and governance.

The meeting’s real value will depend on what comes after the speeches. That is shared frameworks, practical cooperation, measurable commitments and learning between countries. For now, Kochi has become an important diplomatic venue for a question that every economy faces in its own way. The question is: How do women move from participation to power, income, and decision-making?
